Gertrude Wiswell Wells

Nov 18, 1864 - May 1, 1946

For some time now CONTACT has been reporting that the health of Mrs. Gertrude Wells has been steadily failing. Mrs. Wells died at her home on May 1st. Mrs. Wells was born in Cabot, Nov. 18, 1864, the only daughter of Dr. Sherburne and Seraphine Wiswell. She received her education in the public schools of Cabot and was graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1884.

She married Merton D. Wells on Oct. 17, 1889. Mr. and Mrs. Wells had two daughters, Marjorie (Mrs. Wilder Coyle), and Esther (Mrs. Benjamin Bundy), both of whom survive. There are also two grand-daughters, Misses Jane and Nancy Coyle. Mr. Wells' death occurred in 1909.

Mrs. Wells was a faithful and devout member of the United Church of Cabot. For several years and until the time of her death she was a member of the Executive Committee of the United Church. The Judith Lyford Woman's Club had its inception in her home and she enjoyed the honor and privilege of being its first president. She has been a library trustee for many years. Mrs. Wells was the first woman to be elected from Cabot to represent her town at the state legislature. She was well known for her collection of antiques particularly in the field of glass.

Mrs. Wells took an active interest in all the affairs of the community. She was a very gracious and kind person to meet. Funeral services were held at the United Church, May 3rd, Rev. E. H. Nickerson, officiating. Interment was in the family lot in Cabot Village Cemetery, with Harry Walbridge, Raymond Peck, Ralph Perry and Jackson Rogers acting as bearers. Mrs. Robert Bolton played soft organ music before and after the service. Beautiful flowers of all kinds expressed love and respect for the deceased.
